Nwí-Bàrì Elder Wilson Kpàkpàn. Tèè-English Dictionary
ISCOM, Port Harcourt, 2002. — 64 p.
ISBN: ISBN 978-35075-7-5
This dictionary is, to the best of my knowledge, the first published book on Tèè (Tai), which has previously been treated as a dialect of Kana. As linguists, we know there is no rigid dividing line between a dialect and a language; we try to describe all speech-forms which are of interest in so far as they differ from others. In spite of its closeness to Kana, Tèè has a number of sounds which are not found in Kana, and which are represented in this dictionary as hl, hn, hw, hy and (in at least one word) as hm. These stand for sounds which are quite rare in the languages of the world and, in the case of hl, hn, and hm, are not found in any neighbouring language. The author deserves praise for his careful collection of the words of Tèè, which he has written systematically
and with correct tone-marking. He carried on this work at home on his own initiative, and it should be a great help both to those who speak Tèè and to those non-speakers who wish to know more about it.
