This book is the second part of a history of the development and combat use of US tanks since 1915. The previous book covered the period from 1917 to the end of World War II in 1945. This book continues the story, covering the almost 80 years from 1946 to 2025. The principal focus of this volume is the main battle tank, formerly called the medium tank. Light and heavy tanks largely disappeared in the 1960s, though efforts to develop tanks for the mechanized cavalry and expeditionary tank roles have continued. This book does not consider specialized anti-armor vehicles reliant on anti-tank missiles as their principal armament since these have generally been based on light trucks or variants of armored infantry transporters.
