The Complete Dead Sea Scrolls in English (Revised Edition)
Penguin Books, 2004. — 716 p.
A popular publication in the English-speaking world of translations of the so-called “Dead Sea Scrolls” or “Qumran Manuscripts,” named after the place where they were discovered. Scrolls accidentally discovered by Bedouins in several small caves became a real sensation in the scientific community. Work to publish the manuscripts, which began after the discovery in 1947, dragged on for many years, largely due to disagreements in the scientific community. The most comprehensive scholarly edition of the texts is the Discoveries in the Judaean Desert series published by Oxford University Press, currently consisting of 40 volumes (the latest 2008). There are other scientific publications. The work on the full publication of the tests cannot yet be considered complete: in 2017, archaeologists found the 12th cave (previously unknown) and a broken vessel, the manuscript was stolen by thieves around the 1950s.
Geza Vermes (1924 - 2013) - British (Hungarian Jew) Qumran scholar and theologian, long-time head of Judaism studies at Oxford. Since 1962, has been introducing the English-speaking public to translations of Qumran texts.
