Saramaccan is a maroon creole language spoken in Surinam.1 Surinam is the smallest mainland South American country, with about 490,000 inhabitants according to the 2004 census. In addition about 350,000 Surinamers live in the Netherlands. It is one of the two creole languages that have resulted from the various bouts of marronage in Surinam (Ndyuka being the other). Saramaccan dialects are spoken by the Saramaccan and Matawai tribes.
