Philostorgius. Kirchengeschichte (mit dem Leben des Lucian von Antiochen und den Fragmenten eines arianischen Historiographen)
Hrsg. J. Bidez. — Leipzig: J.C. Hinrichs'sche Buchhandlung, 1913.
The church historian Philostorgius, one of the successors of Eusebius of Caesarea, was a lawyer from Constantinople and a native of Cappadocia II. Imitating Pliny the Elder, he sought to supplement his work with the diverse knowledge that was necessary to describe the Universe from the firmament to the depths of the earth. In Ecclesiastical History, the unity of man and nature is demonstrated throughout the narrative. As a student of Eunomius, Philostorgius was strongly influenced by Middle Platonism and Neoplatonism, which manifests itself in his views on the nature of God. In Photius's "Abridgement" the word cosmos is used to mean order and beauty. Thus, the work of Philostorgius differs markedly from the “classical” histories of Eusebius of Caesarea, Socrates Scholasticus, Sozomen of Salamis, Evagrius Scholasticus and Theodoret of Cyrrhus.
