The book is a translation into German of the author's improved and expanded monograph Early Rome and the Latins (= Jerome Lectures, 7). University of Michigan Press, Ann Arbor, 1965. Andreas Alföldi (1895-1981) was a distinguished scholar of ancient Rome and author of several studies on early Rome that stimulated scholarly debate in the 1950s and 1960s. This monograph examines the formation of Rome in the first centuries of its existence in the context of the development of the archaic society of Latium and contacts with neighboring Etruria. The author pays special attention to sources on early Roman history, both archaeological and literary traditions. His interpretation of the role of the first Roman historian, Quintus Fabius Pictor, whom he held responsible for creating the original picture of early Rome, sparked a lively discussion among scholars, which is continued in this 1977 edition.
