在此套教材的编写过程中，遵循了这样一个指导思想：对于每个单元所学的专题内容，要尽可能全面地介绍相关的知识点。这样一来，每个单元的信息量（包括词汇、语法等）都比较大。因此，要求每周完成一个单元的学习有时是不太可能的。授课老师可根据实际情况，灵活掌握教学进度。按照每个学期18周（扣除期末考试两周时间，实际上课一般只有16周；而一年级上学期一般还要扣除两周的军训时间）来计算，每册14个单元的内容还是比较充足的。
在内容安排上，第一册1 — 5单元是语音的学习阶段，6 — 10单元为语音的巩固阶段。为了给单调、枯燥的语音学习增添一点儿乐趣，在6 — 10单元的语音练习中加入了一些绕口令。这些绕口令不仅要求学生能够熟练地念，还要尽可能会背。在完成1 0个单元的学习之后，学生的语音要基本过关。从第一册的11单元开始，特别是到了第二册，将比较密集地介绍葡萄牙语的语法。另外，从第二册开始，还增添了词汇用法的介绍。每个单元课文中出现的主要词汇和短语都会配备相应的例句。而且，为了增加学生的学习兴趣，同时也为了更多地介绍相关的文化知识，除了在课文中穿插一些历史、文化内容以外，还在每个单元的最后安排了一首葡萄牙或巴西著名诗人的经典名诗。这些诗歌，授课老师可以作简单的讲解，然后要求学生尽可能背诵。This is a set of basic textbooks specially prepared for undergraduate Portuguese majors.
