Fleming Ian. Octopussy and the Living Daylights: And Other Stories
Signet Books., 1966. --80 p.
Four bits of shrapnel from the magnum opus of Mr. Fleming. The Last Great Adventures of James Bond 007:
Octopussy: Bond's quarry is a rather odd Englishman, the very proper Major Dexter Smythe. Smythe is a retired officer of the Royal Marines. He is a man of no visible wealth, yet he lives in luxurious idleness. His pet diversion--indeed his obsession--is a dangerous experiment that he is conducting with a predator of the deep, with a many-tentacled beauty whom he fondly has named Octopussy. This darling was a bit surly. The tentacle she lashed around Major Smythe's arm that morning was none to gentle. So when Smythe found himself the sudden quarry of James Bond at cocktail time, the Major had a brilliant, if rather gruesome, inspiration...
The Living Daylights: his daylights are about to blasted out of a living target on a crowded Berlin street. Crouched behind a .308 International Experimental Target rifle, James Bond sights his victim, makes a split-second decision, and gently squeezes the trigger...
The Property of a Lady: a valuable objet d'art, is about to be auctioned at Sotheby's. At the start of the bargaining, the room becomes electric with danger and terror, and nobody but James Bond knows why...
007 in New York: sees him sent to America to warn an ex-MI6 operative about a dangerous liaison. This is basically Fleming’s hate letter to New York.
James Bond, in each episode, searches for people: to apprehend, to identify, to shoot and to warn, with mixed results. This book collection of short stories was the last Ian Fleming James Bond release. It was also released posthumously . You will recognize the titles of two of the short stories from the movie series and some of the elements you see in the movies did come from here. But, in the grand scheme of things, the connection is only minor.
RIP Ian Fleming.
