The poem “The Rime of the Ancient Mariner” by the English poet Samuel Taylor Coleridge, written between 1797 and 1799, is the earliest literary treatment of the legend of the Flying Dutchman. The poem tells the story of supernatural events that happened to a sailor during a long voyage. He tells about this much later to a random interlocutor, whom he distracted from the wedding procession.
In Russian translations it was called `The Old Sailor`, `Song of the Old Sailor`, `The Old Sailor`, `Poem about the Old Sailor` (by N. Gumilyov).
