This book covers different aspects of the use of the R language. Chapters 1 to 5 describe the R language itself. Later chapters describe extensions to the R language available through contributed packages, the grammar of data and the grammar of graphics. In this book, explanations are concise but contain pointers to additional sources of information, so as to encourage the development of a routine of inde-pendent exploration. This is not an arbitrary decision, this is the normal modus operandi of most of us who use R regularly for a variety of different problems. Some have called approaches like the one used here “learning the hard way,” but I would call it “learning to be independent.”
