“The Night Before Christmas” is a story written by Russian writer Nikolai Vasilyevich Gogol. Part of the series “Evenings on a farm near Dikanka”.
The action of the story is chronologically confined to an episode of the reign of Catherine II - the last deputation of the Cossacks, which took place in 1775 and associated with the work of the Commission for the abolition of the Zaporozhye Sich.
The plot of the work takes place in Dikanka, Ukraine. Unnoticed by anyone, two people are circling in the sky: a witch on a broom, who collects stars in her sleeve, and the devil, who hides the month in his pocket, thinking that the coming darkness will keep the rich Cossack Chub, invited to the clerk for kutya, at home, and the blacksmith Vakula, hated by the devil. (who painted a picture of the Last Judgment and the shamed devil on the church wall) will not dare to come to Chubova’s daughter Oksana.
