“The Missing Letter (True, told by the sexton of the *** church)” is a story by Nikolai Vasilyevich Gogol from the series “Evenings on a Farm near Dikanka.” Probably written between 1829 and 1831.
The narrative begins with the complaints of the narrator, Foma Grigorievich, about those listeners who ask him “for some insurance Cossack,” and then tremble all night under the blanket. Then he tells the story of what happened to his grandfather, whom the hetman sent with a letter to the queen.
