The landowner Elena Ivanovna Popova, who is grieving heavily over the death of her husband, is unexpectedly visited by the owner of the neighboring estate - retired artillery lieutenant Grigory Stepanovich Smirnov. He desperately needs money and demands immediate repayment of the debt of Elena Ivanovna's late husband. The landowner, due to the clerk's departure on business, asks to wait a couple of days. Smirnov needs to pay interest on the mortgage and he refuses to leave the landowner’s house until he receives the debt, and having received a refusal, he starts a quarrel and challenges the widow to a duel. Popova accepts the challenge, brings pistols and asks Smirnov to teach her how to shoot. Elena Ivanovna’s actions delight the landowner; moreover, he falls in love with her and immediately confesses his love to her. Popova reciprocates his feelings.
