Dedicated to the grave digger M.P.F.u" . Signature: before P.S. – Ch. Khonte and after P.S. – A. Chekhonte. Included without a subtitle and without dedication in the collection “Innocent Speeches of A. Chekhonte (A.P. Chekhov).” Publication of the magazine "Cricket", M., 1887.
The story “Scary Night” is a parody of the Yuletide “scary” story genre, common in humorous magazines of the 1880s. The early edition of the story was a more outright parody than its later text: Chekhov removed at the end of “The Terrible Night” a naturalistic explanation of the pauses in Panikhidin’s story and his excitement. To create an atmosphere of horror and mystery, Chekhov heavily used ellipses, which he himself later regarded as a purely external device.
