First published in 1875 in the journal Otechestvennye zapiski.In the novel, the writer touches on the problem of “fathers and sons,” examining it through the relationship of the main character, teenager Arkady Makarovich Dolgoruky, with his father Andrei Petrovich Versilov. With the help of the Teenager, the author shows how the personality of the main character is formed through greed, thirst for profit and debauchery. The writer contrasts the nobleman Versilov, the father of Arkady, and the courtyard man Makar Dolgoruky, the formal father. For the author, the second becomes a symbol of understanding the people’s truth and the idea of moral “decency,” one of the main ideas of the novel.
