When this book was first published, the subject of military history had become increasingly popular. Before World War II only a few specialists worked in the field. The military uniform was of particular interest to many. This book attempted to break away from a highly specialized treatment which would be of interest solely to scholars. It was intended primarily for the general reader. All illustrations used were Official U. S. Army except where noted otherwise. Attention was invited to the use of color plates by H. Charles McBarron.
