The aim of the work is to describe and discuss prehistoric mines and to consider the areas from which early man obtained his supplies of raw materials. However, to confine the book to these aspects would result in a very narrow coverage and many no less important facts would have to be ignored. The scope is therefore widened to cover the relevant cultural features, way of life of prehistoric miners, types and treatment of materials and problems of recognition and dating.
