The development of bayonets and other accessories did not necessarily parallel the development of the arms with which they were associated. The determining factors in the selection of a bayonet have very little in common with those affecting the choice of a firearm; rather, they reflect the prevalent military opinion on the purpose and value of a bayonet. This booklet examines American Army bayonets' nomenclature, dimensions, and features, from the earliest 18th-century weapons from France to after the Civil War.
