An accomplished collection of academic essays, originally published in 1992. These are the proceedings of a conference inspired by the 600th anniversary of the Battle of Otterburn, which was fought in 1388 between the English and the Scots.
Colin Tyson examines the contemporary sources for the battle, attempting to determine its precise timing and location, but the other contributors explore the wider context; it must be stressed there is little emphasis here on the fighting itself (although the course of the campaign has been discussed in more detail elsewhere). There are standout essays by Alexander Grant, who considers the political background, and James Reed, who reflects on the battle's legacy via the Border Ballads, but all are worth reading
