Trends Publications, 1991. — 41 p. — ISBN: 9781871541601.3. e5 is one of the most intriguing ways of trying to throw boring Caro-Kann players off their stride. The simplification that is often an unwelcome feature of the open variations of the Caro is avoided and the fight is immediately taken to Black.
There are two types of position that can arise: Firstly, heavyweight manoeuvring situations where both sides have to solve fascinating strategical problems and, secondly, if Black plays ball, razor-sharp tactical positions, where White attempts to push Black off the board before the structural drawbacks of his or her position become apparent.
For a long time 3 eS suffered from a poor reputation. Some games from the 1920s (in particular the famous encounter between Nimzowitsch and Capablanca from New York 1927, where White was reduced to zugzwang) dented enthusiasm for the system, and then in the early 1960s , Tal revived it in his world championship match against Botvinnik, but with unspectacular results. This reputation certainly no longer exists . From being an offbeat attempt against the Caro , 3. e5 is now regarded as a dangerous weapon, and one that Black must be well prepared for.
