Kovacs Laslo. Sicilian: Poisoned Pawn Variation
Pergamon Press. 1986. — 156 p. — 9780080297552
The basic position in the Najdorf Variation of the Sicilian Defence occurs after the moves 1 e4 c5 2 Nf3 d6 3 d4 cxd4 4 Nxd4 Nf6 5 Nc3 a6. The characteristic moves 2...d6 and 5...a6 had been analysed and played before Najdorf in the 1940s by Czech masters, but their results had not been confirmed in practice. The successful results of Miguel Najdorf, the former Polish and now Argentinian grandmaster, attracted the chess world's attention to this opening. The Poisoned Pawn or Fischer Variation is an exceptionally sharp line of the Najdorf Variation, which is characterised by the moves 1 e4 c5 2 Nf3 c5 3 d4 cxd4 4 Nxd4 Nf6 5 Nc3 a6 6 Bg5 e6 7 f4 Qb6 8 Qd2 Qxb2.
