Strong Anna Louise. The Stalin Era
New York: Mainstream Publishers, 1957. — 130 p.
Anna Louise Strong was a left-wing journalist who spent much of her life living in the Communist world reporting on conditions and events she found there. Clearly she was sympathetic to the Stalinist regimes in those countries and even after her 1949 arrest in Russia she continued to see the best in what the "socialist bloc" offered. This book is her interpretation and explanation of the Stalin Era and why there were so many illegal and despotic actions by Stalin and his cohorts. The historical value of this effort is because Ms Strong represents the point of view of those Americans and others who continued to believe that despite the Khrushchev revelations, the Soviet system was nevertheless more beneficial and progressive than Western capitalism and should should therefore be supported regardless of any past misdeeds.
