We follow the Salem auctions with a catalogue solely devoted to the currency of East Africa, highlighting a comprehensive collection of this attractive series formed by Alan Pickering over several decades - there is a wonderful range of date and type on offer here and I doubt a finer collection is extant today. There are also two staggeringly (I do not use the word lightly) lovely notes featuring in this sale: an issued of George VI 10000 shillings (an unbelievably large denomination note in issued format and probably representing a value equivalent to a large part of the real estate in Mombasa or Nairobi at the time of issue!) and an issued George V 50 florins with serial number A/1 00005 - this latter really is what a banknote should look like in terms of design, style and quality and it is an unbelievable discovery
