Sharma Surendra K., Mohan Alladi (eds.) Tuberculosis
2nd edition. — Jaypee Brothers Medical Publishers, 2009. — 1078 p. — ISBN: 9788184485141
The second edition of this multi-authored, popular textbook “Tuberculosis” has been thoroughly updated and rewritten to present a comprehensive account of TB. It has contributions from experts from several parts of the world with a vast experience in this disease. Beginning with insights into the history and epidemiology of tuberculosis, the book deals extensively with the current understanding of the immunology, and immunopathogenetic mechanisms of this disease. The chapters on biology of Mycobacterium, Nontuberculous mycobacteria, susceptibility factors of tuberculosis with special emphasis on HLA and molecular mechanisms underlying the clinical manifestation of TB provide an excellent account of these topics. The clinical presentation, clinical and laboratory diagnosis, the treatment of TB of various organ systems, prevention and control of TB are exhaustively covered. Special emphasis has been laid on the rationale and importance of DOTS and DOTS-Plus; global experiences and expansion of DOTS. Chapters have also been devoted to HIV-TB coinfection, drug-resistant TB (including MDR-TB, XDR-TB), ethical and legal issues in TB, global TB control, and medical schools and TB control. The second edition also carries new chapters on immunology, vaccine, and web resources on TB. This book will be an asset to both undergraduate and postgraduate medical students, a source of reference to the researchers and will help practicing doctors to update their knowledge and aid in rationale, scientific and efficient management of patients with TB. It is hoped that the reader who has gone through ‘Tuberculosis (2nd edition)’ from cover to cover will get a comprehensive bird’s eye view of this subject.
