Blackwell Meike. Ships In Early Irish History
Ballinakella Press, 1992. — 78 p.
Ireland, on the westernmost edge of Europe is an island and as such can only be reached by crossing the surrounding waters. Boats, rafts and ships have played a key role in her history ever since the ice started retreating from its shores.
As wood is easily destroyed by bacteria and fungi, wind and weather, and even man himself, the chances of survival over such a long expanse of time are very limited. Only a boat that had silted over or sunk in a bog would survive and may one day be found. Meanwhile we must depend on written records about the early Irish and their boats.
