Hurt John F. Sicilian Wing Gambit
Thinkers' Press, 1983. — 58 p. — ISBN: 9780938650270.
According to Elliott Fletcher , the title "Wing" Gambit was originally applied to the variation of the King's Bishop Opening when White played 3.b4 after the moves 1.e4 eS 2.Bc4 BcS. However, in the past seventy years it has been used to denote the move b4 by White against the Sicilian Defense after the moves 1 e4 c5.
The idea behind b4 is to deflect the Black pawn from c5 and obtain control of the center by a later d4! Also, b4 opens up the Q-side for the rapid development of White's pieces.
Although current chess theory regards the Wing Gambit as being too impetuous, the Gambit produces interesting and exciting chess. Some theoreticians consider the Gambit unsound, however, the record given here heavily favors White! The surprise factor is beneficial to White and often strong, tactical players will venture it against weaker opponents.
