Lee Richard B., DeVore Irven (eds.) Man the Hunter
Eleventh printing — Aldine De Gruyter, 1987. — 428 p.
First published in 1968, Man the Hunter is a collection of papers presented at a symposium on research done among the hunting and gathering peoples of the world. Ethnographic studies increasingly contribute substantial amounts of new data on hunter-gatherers and are rapidly changing our concept of Man the Hunter. Social anthropologists generally have been reappraising the basic concepts of descent, fi liation, residence, and group structure. This book presents new data on hunters and clarifi es a series of conceptual issues among social anthropologists as a necessary background to broader discussions with archaeologists, biologists, and students of human evolution.
Richard Borshay Lee (b. 1937) is Professor of Anthropology at the University of Toronto, author of The !Kung San (1979) and The Dobe Ju'hoansi (second edition, 1993), and co-editor, with Irven Devore, of Man the Hunter (1968) and Kalahari Hunter-Gatherers (1976), and, with Eleanor Leacok, of Politics and History in Band Societies (1982).
Irven DeVore (1934 – 2014) was an anthropologist and evolutionary biologist, and Curator of Primatology at Harvard University's Peabody Museum of Archaeology and Ethnology. He headed Harvard's Department of Anthropology from 1987 to 1992.
