This book was first published in 1985. It was not only one of the first few direct translations of a primary Chinese source, but it was also part of a cooperative process meant to achieve the highest precision in the rendering of Chinese medical concepts. This is a translation of a textbook for first-year Chinese medical students in China's medical schools, Nanjing, and Shanghai Colleges of Chinese Medicine. There are substantial additions from a variety of sources intended to make the text easier for Western readers without simplifying or interpreting the text. These additions include acupuncture treatments, which are rarely included in Chinese textbooks because acupuncture is a secondary concern in the modern Chinese medical system.
