They were chosen as the best of 1991 from a field of more than 500,000 pictures sent to more than 160 newspapers in Canada, Chile, Mexico, and the United States. Each newspaper held its own weekly photo contest to select winners from its areas most outstanding pictures, then sent them to Kodak for the international judging and awarding of prizes by a distinguished panel of independent judges.
