F O R T H is a language that has, relatively recently, become particularly popular on microcomputers. The reason is quite simple: it is easy to use, and runs a lot faster than interpreted BASIC. Until fairly recently, users of micros have written their programs in BASIC because it is easy to learn, easy to use, and easy to debug; but unfortunately it is rather slow. As micros have developed and become more popular, so people have expected more of them: a program that impressed someone two years ago does not raise an eyebrow today, and a delay in response that was acceptable yesterday is not acceptable today.
