Kluge H. et al. Atlas of CSF Cytology
Thieme, 2007. — 153 p. — ISBN13: 978-3-13-143161-5
This cytological atlas is the product of many years of experience in practical cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) cytology. It is designed to meet the need for a new, comprehensive atlas some 25 years after the most recent ones appeared and to make a contribution toward the optimization of CSF cellular diagnosis.
The range of possible findings in CSF cytological studies is very wide, and misdiagnoses are thus likely if the examiner lacks sufficient knowledge and experience.
We have thus put special emphasis on the presentation of typical cytological pictures in the acute and remission phases of diseases of the central nervous system (CNS), as well as typical cytological changes over the course of treatment. Furthermore, we suggest appropriate immunocytological studies for further work-up in cases where the routine cytological examination of the CSF alone does not yield a sufficiently precise cytological diagnosis.
The spectrum of CSF cytological pictures is systematically organized in diagnostic categories, i.e., infectious and inflammatory diseases of the CNS, intracranial hemorrhage, traumatic and hypoxic-ischemic brain damage, and malignant processes with neoplastic meningitis (with reference to the World Health Organization classification of brain tumors, 2000). In each chapter, the images are preceded by a brief theoretical discussion.
We thank our readers for their attention and hope this atlas will help and encourage them in the everyday laboratory practice of CSF cytology and in comparative cytological research. We would be glad to receive suggestions as to how the book might be further improved.
We would be especially grateful for submissions of additional illustrations or of cytological preparations showing uncommon but diagnostically important findings (rarities).
