Books, maps, artifacts, artwork, photographs, manuscripts, articles, pamphlets, and ephemera from the Africana Library of Humphrey Winterton. Assembled over about 30 years, the collection depicts the breadth of African experience; documents African life; European life in Africa in all its manifestations; and the African landscape, in particular as it changed over time. The catalog acts as a bibliographic reference for many rare items. (It should be mentioned for researchers that Northwestern University Herskovits Library acquired the Humphrey Winterton Collection of East African photographs in 2002, containing about 7,610 photographs organized in 76 separate albums. These are viewable online.)
