May Timothy Michael. Culture and Customs of Mongolia
Westport & London: Greenwood Publishing Group, Inc., 2009. — xxvi, 163 p. — (Culture and customs of Asia) — ISBN: 9780313339837.
This book is designed to introduce Mongolia as a country, along with its customs and culture in the modern era. Mongolia is primarily known for one thing: Chinggis Khan, or as most Westerners erroneously know him, Genghis Khan. Without doubt, Chinggis Khan is a large part of Mongolia’s identity, but there is much more. Because Mongolia has been isolated and considered somewhat of an esoteric destination just north of China, many people do not realize that Mongolia is an independent country and that the language is not Chinese. Furthermore, being a relatively poor country with a small population, it has not been a major player in international affairs. Roughly the size of the United States east of the Mississippi, Mongoliahas a very small population but is rich in customs and traditions different from those of virtually any other place in the world. While almost 3 million Mongolians live in Mongolia, more Mongolians live in China and Russia, along with small numbers elsewhere.
