Gordon Roger Alexander Buchanan Parks (November 30, 1912 - March 7, 2006) was an American photographer, musician, writer and film director. He is best remembered for his photographic essays for Life magazine and as the director of the 1971 film. Beginning in the 1960s, Parks branched out into literature, writing The Learning Tree (1963). He authored several books of poetry, including "Whispers of Intimate Things." The book is self-illustrated and includes photos of New York.
"A very special book," wrote Katherine Gauss Jackson in Harper s magazine of Gordon Parks: A Poet and His Camera. Published in 1968, it was the first volume in which the famous Life photographer combined his photography and his poetry, and it won the enthusiastic acclaim of reviewers throughout the country.
Now, in this new book, the photographer - poet presents new poems and pictures, all previously unpublished, which once more reveal the power and beauty of his artistic vision. Whether he is speaking softly of lost love, of dreams and resignation and of a pastoral childhood, or crying out in grief and anger at senseless violence, his poems and photographs add dimension to each other, and each conveys its own perceptive message of concern for the human spirit.
