Estonian philately was connected with Czarist Russia which printed its first stamps in 1857. The first true Estonian stamp known as flower design was issued on November 24,1918. Philatelic activity in subsequent years was lively and extensive. World War II scattered our collectors to many countries and continents. Most of them renewed their favorite hobbies in their new homelands. The most numerous group of Estonian philatelists are now members of EFÜR in Stockholm and E.F.S. in New York. Each roster has 160 members. Smaller organized Estonian stamp clubs are located in Australia, Canada, Denmark, Finland, Germany, Great Britain and the Netherlands. There had been a severe need for an extensive and authentic handbook or catalog of Estonian philately.
