Liberman Gaulthier (ed., trans.). Alcée. Fragments
Paris: Les Belles Lettres, 1999. — cxxvii + 95; 96–279 (1–195 double; 2 vols). — (Collection des Universités de France publiée sous le patronage de l’Association Guillaume Budé). — ISBN: 2251004769.
Edition of poems by Alcaeus with rich commentary (original Ancient Greek text, apparatus criticus and French translation). Probably born c. 625–620 BCE on Lesbos, Alcaues wrote poetry that dealt with politics, war, wine, love, hymns to the gods, moralizing, and myth (though possibly both moralizing and myth were always subordinated to specific contexts). Politics may be dealt with through personal abuse or the grandeur of myth and ritual or both; the invitation to drink may be supported by myth or the imperatives of the weather. He is open to a range of influences. In his use of lyric for abuse he blurs the difference between lyric and iambus. He was popular at Attic symposia and a favorite with Horace.
