The jurors of the 2002 Adaline Kent Award are proud to honor Connie Samaras as this year's recipient. Her work — which addresses a wide range of social concerns — is at once critical and beautiful The breadth and consistency of her art and her dedication to developing her vision has resulted fn a body of work which speaks poignantly to our changing contemporary conditions.
Few artists besides Samaras have integrated work in visual culture, cultural politics, and professional and academic cultures into a creative practice that is both scholarly and artistically innovative. And few have sustained such an ambitious practice while exhibiting primarily in non-profit and alternative spaces. In reflecting on her two decades of production, especially her most recent, large-scale photographs that address (among other things) contemporary U.S. cityscapes and the intersection of military, police and entertainment technologies, we concluded that Samaras is most deserving of this award.
