What Is This Book?Quick Spanish for Emergency Responders is an on-scene survival guide for firefighters, paramedics, and EMTs; it is intended for use during routine calls and emergencies.
Who Should Use This Book? This book is primarily for firefighters, paramedics, and EMTs. However, search and rescue personnel, hospital and prehospital emergency care providers, and other emergency workers have similar communication needs and will find this book helpful.
How Is This Book Organized?Quick Spanish for Emergency Responders has six chapters:
basic vocabulary,
emergency responder vocabulary,
commands and key terms,
emergency responder scenarios,
culture and survival tips, and
a mini-dictionary of commands, key questions, and statements.
Sections are developed in a logical progression, and communication terms are linked among sections for easy reference. Throughout the book, Ojo(“Watch out!”) boxes explain tricky points in using Spanish: errors to avoid and idiomatic expressions to make you look good. Overly academic terms re generally avoided, but we use a few basic grammatical terms in parentheses, like verbs and prepositions.
What Kind of Spanish Am I Learning? We use generic Latin American Spanish, with a sprinkling of regional terms. This book will help you speak with and understand the majority of Latinos in North America. Quick Spanish for Emergency Responders is an emerging tool that helps you serve citizens who are primarily from Mexico and Central America. Although we focus on everyday Spanish spoken in the Southwest, especially in Arizona and California, this book will help you communicate with most Spanish speakers throughout the United States and Canada.
