Egone E. Boston, Old and New, Through Egonegraphs
Branden Press, 1983. — 100 p.
I developed this technique in 1975 when I was seventy six years old. A friend of mine, who is in the advertising business, suggested to call these prints Egonegraphs. Considering that the transformation of a regular photograph into something different is accomplished in the darkroom, it could
be called Darkroom Magic or Darkroom Manipulation. Such a transformation is not new to me: back in 1918 I started making Bromoil Transfers, which look more as graphic art prints than photographs. I still have twenty five such Bromoils in my collection.
Without going into technical details, I can state that first I take a regular photograph — either a black and white, color negative or slide; then I transform them into Egonegraphs through four to five sessions in the darkroom, using a lot of photographic paper and many hours. The process is
not a secret in that I teach it. The process is based on what some wrongly call "Solarization" , or more appropriately, the
Sabatier method. I have, however, changed and improved this method. In any event, I do not use any Kodalith film.
