The quality of color film and photographic equipment is constantly being improved. Amateurs as well as professionals can now achieve color images that are technically superlative and that have a clarity and intensity of hue not available from earlier color films. But mastering color photography means more than simply knowing how to use bold colors. As this book shows, several of the early processes yielded extremely delicate effects that have been used to create some of the most beautiful color pictures ever made.
This book explores both the fascinating history of color photography and the way you can control color if you know how modern color processes work. It also looks at the way in which colors behave and shows how you can take special measures to bring out the quality you want, as in the vivid greens in the picture opposite.
Response to color is a highly individual matter. Not only do people see colors differently, they also value them differently and are affected by them in diverse ways. In a photograph, the way you treat color will help define the composition and establish a definite mood. The portfolio of pictures on the following nine pages shows some of the many ways this is accomplished - and how photographers past and present have used color for individual and original expression in their work.
