Campbell S.L., Nikoukhah R. Auxiliary Signal Design for Failure Detection
Princeton University Press, 2004. — 211 p.
The general areas of failure detection and model identification cover a number of different technical areas and numerous types of applications. No book could hope to cover all of this material. This book focuses on one particular approach to failure detection which is the use of auxiliary signals to assist in multimodel identification.
The approach of this book has a nice geometricalbasis. Considerable effort is spent in developing this geometrical insight and providing a logical development of the material. In our development we have paid equal attention to developing a rigorous theory of some generality, a well motivated presentation, and the development of practical numerical algorithms, some of which are given in the last chapter.
The material in this book draws from a number of areas in engineering and applied mathematics, including control theory, numerical analysis, functional analysis, convex analysis, optimization, and the theory of differential equations. The book is potentially of use to a variety of readers from practicing engineers to applied mathematicians. Given the range of potential readers and the number of different areas that are involved, we have had to make a number of decisions. While it should be accessible to others, we have aimed the presentation at the level of a graduate student in either engineering or applied mathematics. We have also wanted the material to be readable and not overly pedantic and formal. Thus we have made an attempt to define all terminology that might be known to only a subset of readers. However, these definitions are often included in the text and given in an informal style. We also believe that you do not really understand something unless you have examples in hand, so we have included a large number of specific examples.
