To the End of the Thirteenth Century. — Roma: Pontificio Istituto Orientale, 1993. — 471 p.
This is the first of four projected volumes covering the history of the Church in Ukraine from the tenth century to the present. The plan is ambitious and timely. This volume appears just two years after the collapse of the Soviet Union and the emergence of Ukraine as Europe's second largest Slav state. One might imagine that Senyk would be keen to grasp the opportunity for some trumpet-blowing. Thankfully, one would be wrong. Senyk firmly and consistently refuses to jump aboard the bandwagon of national mythologising. She is not out to prove the antiquity of a distinctive Ukrainian culture or sense of nationhood.
