A terrific introductory look at archeology for those wanting to explore other epochs and achievements in various societies that once existed pre-dating even Greece and Egypt’s storied antiquity. The accounts of laymen, adventurers, scholars and sometimes a combination of some or or all of these men's qualities mentioned is intriguing. The fact that Central and South America , with its variety of very advanced cultures, was left to fallow undiscovered, in the wake of the Egyptian and latter middle eastern discoveries during the nineteenth century, lend even greater value to startling revelations, about what was eventually revealed in those dense tropical jungles. “Gods, Graves and Scholars” left me wanting to know more about these men who were willing to act out of compulsion , desire, and sometimes rank disregard and recklessness for their own safety, so that they might satiate their own thirst for knowledge. Their accounts are told with a deft touch by the author which made for both an enjoyable and edifying diversion. Great starter material for those interested in digging deeper into those lost worlds rediscovered between the covers of this book.
