Herbert Frank. The Santaroga Barrier
1968
First published in a shorter version in Amazing Stories magazine, 1967.
Santaroga seemed to be nothing more than a prosperous farm community, but there was something .different .about the town.
No juvenile delinquency. No crime. No cigarette sales. Outsiders found no homes for sale or rent in the valley, and no one ever moved out. And no cheese, wine, beer, or produce from outside the valley could be sold here.
Maybe Santaroga was the last outpost of American individualism. Maybe they were just a bunch of religious kooks. Or maybe something else was going on.
