Leon-Portilla Miguel. Fifteen Poets of the Aztec World
Oklahoma Press, 2000. - 328 p.
ISBN: 978-0806132914
"This book is the result of my rethinking in English what I gathered years ago and have more recently augmented concerning the lives and creations of a group of composers of songs, probably the first poets known to us in America. The present work was preceded by another book I wrote in Spanish, which, published by the National University of Mexico Press, has been continuously in print since its appearance in 1967. In preparing this English edition I could not ignore two relevant factors. One is the appearance of other contributions on the same themefew, indeed, but all deserving to be taken into account with an unbiased yet critical eye. The other has to do with the contents of this book. To simply ask a translator, as skillful as he or she might be, to translate from Spanish to English materials some of which were originally in Nahuatlthe language of the Aztecs and their neighborswould be risky to say the least. This explains why, assisted in some chapters by Grace Lobanov, who has helped me before, I rethought, augmented, and rewrote in English what in many respects resulted in a new book".
