Abstarct: There is a lack of precise information on the effectivencss of specific methods in generating optimum designs for realistic aircraft structures. In this situation it is difficult for designers to make decisions on which systems to employ for a given design problem and which developments to pursue. Thus it is necessary for designers to bc aware of the relative merits of the different methods currently used for the design optimisation of advanced aircraft.
