This book is a photographic presentation of the uniforms and equipment of the Union army and navy. Examples are given of pre-war volunteer units, cavalry, artillery, and infantry. Navy and marines are covered as well. The Union army was a mighty force well provided with standard uniforms, but there were exceptions and many details varied. Short text provides an overview of armies and corps, and the main events of the war.
