Following a presentation of the 17th-century background of shot and pike, the manual exercises of French infantry is described based on several iterations of official regulations from 1700 to 1760. Changes in firearms are recorded, as well as the influence these had on drill movements. Many period illustrations are included, as well as text from several of the pertinent royal Ordonnances.
