When describing materials, you first need to be guided by these rules.
You should not be guided by the description of similar materials uploaded earlier, because the rules are constantly being improved and have no retroactive effect.
If you notice that there is material that is not properly described, please propose corrections using the form available for any file.

1. What are the general description guidelines?

Thematic content should be included in the file description. Uninformative formal descriptions will be rejected.
Do not write phrases like "I wrote this work myself and it is perfect", "download everyone! 111", etc., and also do not give other value judgments about the material.
Do not specify the format and size of the file like "PDF file 30.5 MB" (these info will be displayed automatically).
DO NOT USE UPPER CASE anywhere except abbreviations.
Don't use abbr-on in file desc-on.

Do not duplicate the file title in its description.
Put the publication details in the first line of file description and do not duplicate it in the title.

If there is no author, then the surname of the editor or compiler is specified in the nominative case with the corresponding mark:

In case of collective authorship, the title should contain first author or editor marked "et al.". The description should contain a complete list of authors and/or makes a note "Team of authors" before the output.

With a small number of co-authors you can specify all of them in the title:

For reference and encyclopedic publications, catalogs, training courses, the publisher/issuing company may be specified as the author.

The order of the header elements must strictly correspond to the above because the correct sorting of the category list depends on it.
For multi-volume and serial editions, the volumes/issues of which have different authors or editors, it is allowed to indicate only the title. This will allow them to get proper alphabetically sorted in category list.

Mandatory: publisher; year of publication; number of pages in the print edition; for the 2nd and subsequent editions - number of editions/reprints and (2nd, 3rd... revised and enlarged, stereotyped, etc.).
Optional: type (textbook, monograph, encyclopedia, reference, study guide, workbooks, etc.), a complete list of authors/editors (if the title doesn't contain all of them), information about the translation and the translator, the total number of volumes/parts, series name, ISBN etc.
If the data on the book cover, title page and publication details (usually on the back of the title page) is different, the information in the description is specified according to the publication details.

8. How to describe standards and other regulatory documents?

12. What if the author and/or publication details is unknown or missing by the nature of the material?

In the absence of information about the author/editor/compiler, make a note "Author is not specified" (or "Without author") at the beginning of the description. In the file title, specify only the title of material.
If there is no mandatory publication destails, make a note "Publication details are not specified" (or "Publication details are unknown") at the beginning of the description.
If only part of the data is unknown, indicate those that are known. The rest should be indicated as follows: "publisher is not specified", "year is not specified", etc.
The same should be done if the publication details is known to you, but you do not find it possible to disclose it (for student work and unpublished teaching materials).
Optional information (type of book, ISBN, etc.) does not require absence marks.

13. How to add cover image to a file?

Covers images are automatically generated for PDF, DJVU, FB2, MOBI, EPUB, DOC/DOCX, RTF, PPT/PPTX and XLS/XLSX files.
The first page of the file will be displayed as a cover by default.
You can manually add cover images for files of other formats, as well as replace automatically generated covers with better ones.
For this purpose, you should upload a cover picture file from your disk using the file editing form (for your files) or cover images replacement proposal form (for other people's files).
Images of BMP, GIF, JPG, PNG or TIFF formats in size of at least 320x240 are suitable for covers.
